The Wedding Gown That Made History

The wedding moment is considered a very important moment of life, and the clothes wore were important and elegant same as ceremony was, even since middle ages. For the bride, the wedding day is view as a really special day, maybe even a moment which accomplish life, and that is why at this event the wedded pair must wear something really differently. We can say that the wedding gown is old as wedding is, but the form of the wedding dress that we know today, came quite late.




In the Western culture, the wedding dresses began to be more of the more elaborate and luscious, especially since medieval times. In the middle ages, most marriages were based on interest, it could be a union between two families, two family businesses and even two countries.

Therefore, the dress was supposed to benefit the bride and post it in a favorable light, as it is a sign of social status. Among the poor, there were not such lavish ceremony, wedding dress being a real luxury, and so there was only a small party which symbolizes the marriage of the two people.

The wedding dress differ from culture to culture, the white for the wedding dress being a fairly modern invention which is trying to suggest purity. Since they no longer wear in all cultures virginity before the wedding, the wedding dress began to be made also trough the materials of other colors like blue, ocher, green, pink, beige, etc.

One of the first women to wear white wedding dress is Queen Mary of Scotland when she married Francis II of France, in the XVI century. White dress hasn’t been seen well especially that in France, during that period, white was considered a color of mourning.

The white color for a wedding dress became popular only in the nineteenth century, with the marriage of Queen Victoria with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. The Queen dress made furors which has caused many couples to choose a similar white wedding dress as the Queen’s.

Queen Victoria and Queen Mary of Scotland – Before spreading the white color for wedding dresses, brides were dressed in gowns of all colors, less black color which was a sign of mourning and the red color which was considered a particular color for prostitutes. In China and India, red was the color of prosperity and luck and that is why many brides often get to choose this color for their wedding dress.

Also in the nineteenth century, the blue color was very widespread in wedding dresses; this color was considered the color of the Virgin Mary, a color of purity, fidelity and everlasting love. The blue color for the wedding dress has lost “ground” against the whites, but nevertheless remained in tradition the fact that the bride must wear something blue at the wedding, and so she will have a faithful husband throughout the marriage.

The way that wedding dress looks still today, long and often large, with veil, train or all sorts of accessories to put on the head, comes from the way that princess were dressing since medieval times, to reflect their statute and social power. The dresses were made from the most expensive materials of the time, silk, velvet, satin on that were applied all kinds of precious stones.
