Though he didn’t receive a fashion education proper to fashion design school, as in his days these schools didn’t exist, he did apply and attended an art school where he just perfected his drawing skills. He practiced mostly on sketching the latest fashion for his mother at the same time traveling to Paris to learn about design.
He followed a career in fashion starting with 1930s, the 40s caught him with costumes designs for Broadway and Paramount Pictures Studio. It was only in the 60s that he reached the celebrity status. At that time he began designing dresses and gowns for the first lady – Jacqueline Kennedy and from that moment on he was the designer responsible for Jackie’s wardrobe during her years in the White House.
The selection of Cassini as a fashion designer was quite a surprise for the intellectual designers of that time, but Oleg Cassini, who had social connections with the Kennedys, had convinced Jacqueline Kennedy that his Hollywood experience would make her a fashion standout as First Lady. He was right, since from that date on, the press started releasing praised chronicles on her ensembles. “The Times” wrote: “Cassini from the start produced a wardrobe that was elegant but modern”. After the Kennedy administration passed, the 300 outfits of Jacqueline Kennedy set several trends that lasted the entire decade.
As a business man he was very astute as he proved to be the first American designer to license his name to other products. Cassini’s creations reflected his love for women’s curves, flattering them in a way that was always stylish yet reserved. The publicity received by Cassini’s work for the first lady inspired the women from 18 to even 80 to wear the simple look, geometric shape of his creations.
During his career he designed very creative wedding gowns that were added embroideries and embellishments with beads and crystals. Collection of Oleg Cassini wedding gowns with crystals are shown all around the world with modern features interpretations of classic styles. These timeless dress designs make his creations to last and to be worldwide desired by the future to be brides.
