Malawi’s Wedding Gowns

Celebrating your wedding in the traditional features of your country’s culture involves the inclusion of elements that relate to the descriptive side of the tradition. These elements can be displayed by the presence of wedding attires that are created in the same note of traditionalism thus being seen as the benchmarks of the country’s culture and religious beliefs. The Malawi fashion in this regard is the fashion to depict simplicity of the life style that rules among the Malawi people. One can not meet expensive clothing while walking on the streets of Malawi country, as these people are indeed considered a poor nation.

And as such the simplicity of the style is the general note when it comes to the way of dressing, Chinteji being the definitive popular clothing among the Malawi women. This is a kind of fabric that is used in the designing and creation of an apron traditionally worn by the women of Malawi. The modern times have brought meanwhile improvement and novelty in the materials of the Malawi fashion, therefore new outfits emerged on the fashion market. This aspect is seen in the Malawi‘s wedding gowns where the favored outfit is a two piece suit that includes the wearing of a skirt and a blouse combined with the wearing of a veil on behalf of the brides and Western designed suits on behalf of the grooms.

The fashion designers that have included in their creations sources of inspiration to belong to the various traditional attires, have designed entire collections using traditional Malawi textiles and recycled fabrics merely to produce combinations that reflect rich printed textiles cut in western styling of a dress design and conception. Some of these fashion designers attempt to compete on the Malawi fashion market with products that are of second hand clothing, but due to the prices of the latter’s, the acquiring of fashion designers creations still proves to be unaffordable to the most of the Malawi people.

The Malawi’s wedding gowns follow the same rule, most of the brides preferring to wear their colorful African textiles in the creation of self made wedding gowns revealing dresses that are cut in the format of sheath, many designed in such a manner that fit and show the waistline and the body’s curves in an audacious way with cap sleeves to cover the round shape of the shoulders and a turban worn on the head or different braided bands colored in the main color that belongs to the wedding dress.

The displaying of colors inside a Malawi traditional wedding is the general feature that accompanies the celebration of a wedding and in this respect the spectacle of colors presented both by the appearance of the bride and the rest of her guests is sometimes that vivid and blended with each others that one could hardly tell who is the bride and who is a female guest. That is why many times the weddings are being carried in a mixture of joy and energy brought in by the displaying of the lively colors allowing everybody to feel the spirit of the marital act in the same and equal manner.
