Gothic represents a style in architecture that was prevalent starting with the period of Roman Empire decay and reaching the period of Renaissance in the 15th century. But 18th century is also known to have brought some characteristics of this style especially in the interior design along with the rococo style, but this combination was made in more romantic and less important manner. When it emerged again in the 19th century during the Victorian period, it was mainly revived as a reaction against the symmetry of the classical style and step by step gothic style began to influence not only the public buildings, but the domestic interiors as well.

The gothic style especially in the architecture field developed some features; as ecclesiastical details it contained elements of ogee arches, pointed arches, and stained glass. The specific colors were red, black, gold and blue used in heraldic emblems that represented mythical figures (mostly beasts) next to the tree – the symbol of life. The characteristics of the gothic style are the ones to be found also in the fashion style known today as the “goth” style. The same colors are the ones to represent the color of gothic attires and the pointed arch so clearly defined in the decorative style in exterior building elements and those of the interior is to be reflected also in the overall aspect of a gothic dress style.
