Elizabethan style in wedding gowns




A wedding isn’t just a wedding, but a strong mark of the bride’s and groom’s personalities, hobbies and passions. upon the happier day of their lives’ ceremony. That’s why sometimes weddings can be organized in certain, specific styles according to the couple’s wishes. Some might  want to have a beach wedding, or a wedding on the top of the mountains with only a bunch of people and the priest, or some might want a medieval or Elizabethan one, with proper settings, floral decorations and costumes. The later is one special, totally different and amazing wedding, especially if it follows the Elizabethan rituals and processions.




Back to the that era, the Elizabethan wedding gown was, usually, a ball-gown style; for the bride that came from the upper class didn’t wear a white dress, custom that came later that period, but her best gown – or even a new one, of floor-length and which covered the whole body – and a kirtle, along with a cloak. The fabrics that were most used by the nobility were velvet, satin and corduroy along with silk and linen ruffs for the necks and cuffs. The bride was allowed to wear a necklace and, usually, the hairstyle was very simple, being let loose.

For the lower class brides, things were different, for their wedding gowns were corsets style and, sometimes, chemises made of flax, cotton and wool in different shades of red, green, blue, orange, tan, black and grey were worn beneath the gown. The brides’ hair – which was let loose only before getting married but always under a bonnet after getting married – and gown were adorned with fresh flowers and, traditionally, the bride carried a bouquet, which took the shape of a ‚pomander’. The wealthier brides’ gowns could also be adorned with gold and silver ornaments. The lower class brides could also have bridesmaids who would have similar attires.

Nowadays, those age lovers who want to recreate the atmosphere of those times and revive the Elizabethan customs and features, try their best to have a perfect romantic medieval wedding. For a guaranteed result, this age must hall-mark everything, from wedding rituals to the newly-weds outfits. The Elizabethan wedding gown designers, nowadays, try to obtain the same aspect. Usually, the wedding gowns created in the Elizabethan style are made of fabrics like satin, velvet, brocade, Indian silk dupioni or silk, in general, expensive fabrics.

At the bride’s desire, a dressmaker or designer can perfectly immitate an Elizabethan wedding dress model after the bride’s measurements, height and body shape by using, for more exact details, old photos taken from the Internet  and which can be perfect sources of inspiration for a perfect Elizabethan wedding dress creation. The gown can have a square neckline or a trimmed one, but to look like an Elizabethan wedding gown, must have long, easily bouffant sleeves, along with a V jeweled belt, to accentuate the bride’s waist.

After all, if you want a romantic medieval wedding gown, you will have it because every wish can come true, if really strong.
