Egyptian Wedding Gowns

The ancient Egyptians are known as the first civilization that set the civil marriage laws. Therefore, traditional wedding ceremonies are considered very important and are highly praised. Wedding gowns are a major part of the event as well. All women must wear the traditional Egyptian wedding dress. So, if you want to have a genuine Egyptian wedding you should understand and respect their traditions and also abide by their guidelines. The Egyptian bride is a symbol of wealth, prestige, tradition and respect. That is why wedding dresses should reflect these aspects. However, modern Egyptian brides also wear white wedding gowns with delicate, golden handmade embroideries.

Egyptian wedding gowns are unique and very interesting. They are quite colored and have a lot of designs and embellishments. These elements give the bride a vivacious look. The most common colors usually associated with Egyptian weddings are blue, pink, red, white, black, silver and gold. Gold is considered to be the color of the Egyptian queens. Hence all wedding dresses should have a gold item in order to attract richness and make the bride look like a queen on her wedding day.

It is very important to remember that Egyptians are Muslims and their religion forbids women to show too much of their skin. Therefore, wedding dresses are long and cover almost the entire body. In order to prevent the bride from feeling too uncomfortable on her wedding dress, a lighter and delicate fabric is used to create that dress. Linen, a sheer and very comfortable fabric will allow the bride’s skin to breathe underneath the dress. Most Egyptian brides are also using a shawl in order to hide their face from the guests. The groom is the only one entitled to see his wife’s face. Although it can be a bit irritating, this shawl can also enhance the bride’s features and add a touch of mystery.

Another significant and very exciting custom of Egyptian weddings is painting the bride’s hands with henna. Henna designs are meant to protect the bride from evil and prepare her for a new life. Bridal accessories are also very important and their main purpose is to complement the entire wedding gown. Most common jewelries are large bracelets, round earrings and necklaces mostly made of gold. The wedding bouquet usually contains green elements in order bless the young couple with many children.
