Chiffon Wedding Gowns




When choosing their wedding dress most women only think about how charming it is and how gorgeous will they look wearing it. But there is another quite significant detail that must be taken into account. Fabrics used to create these dresses have a very important role in making the bride feel comfortable during the whole wedding. All fabrics are highly qualitative and very beautiful but have different properties. Some of them are very light and soft which makes them suitable for summer dresses, while others are more indicated for winter weddings.




Chiffon is one of the most common and highly appreciated fabrics. The term comes from the French word “chiffe”, which means “rag”. In 1700’ in European countries, luxurious chiffon was a symbol of wealth and status. Only women coming from rich or royal families could afford to wear wedding dresses made of chiffon. Until the invention of nylon, in 1938, chiffon was entirely made of silk. In 1958 polyester was first produced, so polyester chiffon also became popular. Polyester chiffon is less expensive and lasts longer. However, designers and brides alike prefer silk chiffon because it is more elegant and it can also be dyed.

Chiffon is a very smooth and delicate fabric. Once a symbol of luxury, chiffon is nowadays more affordable than other fabrics such as silk or satin. The fact that it not wrinkles easily and allows the skin to breathe, makes him highly recommended for spring or summer weddings. It is also easy to transport, in case of a destination wedding, and it can be very well cleaned and ironed. Another major advantage consists on its feminine look given by its ability to flow easily. Chiffon wedding dresses are very sensual, beautiful and highly sophisticated. Being made of silk, chiffon is also pleasant to wear and easy to arrange. Another important characteristic that should be considered is its transparency. That is why, chiffon is most of the times layered. A fabric similar to chiffon and often confused with, is organza. Still, organza is stiffer than chiffon and does not flow easily. It is also less shiny.

Chiffon wedding dresses are ideal for weddings taking place outdoor, on a beach or garden but it can also be worn at formal ceremonies. Chiffon is a refined and feminine fabric and any bride wearing a dress made of it will look fabulous.
